Answer:
Emotions. If you read something tragic and feel really sad, you will remember what made you feel that way. Same with other emotions.
Explanation:
The author intended to create a bittersweet mood. Though the overseas trip has ended, and there is a happy crowd waiting for the ship to dock, the captain, who is the narrator's father, is dead. The vocabulary and phrases used, like exulting, the prize we sought is won, eager faces, etc, describe happiness. But phrases like cold and dead, pale and still, and mournful tread, describe death, making the poem's mood bittersweet.
On January 1st, every 13-year-old woke up with the ability to fly. It happened one January five years ago. It was magical, unexpected, and insane! We don't know what happened-how it happened-but it happened. I had turned 13, and it was January 1st! I woke up on this day, excited. I looked on my back, but there were no wings. I thought I might come into the air any second now, but nothing happened. I looked out the window, and every 13-year-old was flying! What had happened to me? Was the magic not working? Until we realized, that was not the story. There was a background to this impossible thing, and I was very much part of it.
