The word schizophrenogenic was first proposed in the 1940s to describe an emotionally distant mother whose child became schizophrenic.

What was the word, schizophrenogenic used for?

Back in the the 1940s when the United States was more traditional and women were meant to be saddled with the responsibility of raising children, they would blame her if the child became schizophrenic.

They would say the mother must have been emotionally distant and so labelled them schizophrenogenic. The word has since been removed from use.
