The statistical measures of income method are usually used to measure poverty.

In the United States, poverty is determined by comparing an individual's or family's income to the least amount of money required to meet basic requirements. People are categorized as poor if their income is below that level.

In order to provide a different perspective on poverty in the United States that better represents living in the 21st century, including modern social and economic realities and governmental policies, the Census Bureau established the Supplemental Poverty Measure, or SPM, in 2010.

The official poverty measure, which continues to be the country's source for official poverty data and for assessing eligibility for means-tested programs, is not replaced by the SPM, as its name implies.
