Joan need to weigh 0.555 kg of Sodium chloride.

It says that Joan need to weigh 555 grams of Sodium Chloride. But the scale in her lab will only weigh kilograms. So she needs to know how much in kilograms is 555 g.

We have the relation between kilograms and grams. i.e.,

                                    1 kg = 1000 g

So, 1 g = 1/1000 kg

⇒ 555 g = 555/1000 kg = 0.555 kg

Hence Joan should weigh out 0.555kg of Sodium Chloride.
