Inspiration causes intercostal muscles to contract and the lungs to inflate.

Inhaling air or inspiration and expiration or exhaling air outside of the lungs are the two processes that are included in pulmonary ventilation. During inhaling, there is a contraction of the intercostal muscles and diaphragm. This results in the expansion of the rib cage. Along with this, lung volume also increases.

During exhaling, there is relaxation of the intercostal muscles and diaphragm. This results in the contraction of the rib cage. Along with this, lung volume also decreases. Intercostal muscles and abdominal muscles participate in forced exhalation. Thus, by forcing the air out of the lungs.

Inspiration causes intercostal muscles to contract and the lungs to inflate.
