In 1663, King Louis XIV made New France a royal province, putting control into his hands.

Charter, proprietary, and royal colonies are the three different types of colonies. In this instance, the term "royal colony" or "royal province" refers to a colony whose government is headed by individuals chosen by and answerable to the parent state's current monarch. The Crown owned and operated all of the royal colonies. These lands only existed to produce wealth for England, and the King appointed the Governor and his Council. The Colony that became the first "royal colony" was in 1624 after the Crown of the Kingdom of England revoked the royal charter it had granted to the Company and took over management.
