"A neuron in the aorta detects oxygen content in the blood and relays this information to the brain. This neuron is an afferent fiber in the peripheral nervous system."
A branch of the vagus nerve is the aortic nerve. It provides peripheral baroreceptors and chemoreceptors located in the aortic arch with autonomic afferent nerve fibers. "The tenth cranial nerve is the vagus nerve." Except for the first and the second cranial nerve which is the part of the central nervous system the rest of the cranial nerves are a part of the peripheral nervous system.
Since this nerve fiber detects the oxygen content in the blood and relays this information to the brain it serves a sensory function. These nerves are known as the afferentnerves that transmit the impulse towards the information processing center.
