Beginning as a fight between the loosely aligned anti-communist resistance groups and the communist-dominated left-wing resistance group EAM-ELAS, it later intensified into a massive Civil War between the Greek state and the communists.
Around 160,000 individuals were killed in the war. A tenth of the population of the country of Greece was rendered homeless, resulting in significant social devastation.
