Realism emphasized the depiction of the working class.

This movement of art was developed in France in the mid-19th century.  Its objective was to show and bring conscience about the lower classes' daily life.

Its main characteristics are:

  • rejection of ideal models of beauty, used in Classical and Romantic art.
  • naturalism in the representation of human figures and landscapes.
  • the main topics were peasants, working-class life, and city life.

Gustav Courbet was the first artist to proclaim himself a Realist.

The natural way of depicting non-idealized figures caused shock in the middle and upper classes which usually consumed art.
