Multicultural therapeutic communication is the capacity to effectively communicate with people from other cultures while being conscious of one’s own prejudices and biases.

The three important factors to multicultural therapeutic communication are:

1. Gain knowledge about the beliefs and values of different cultures. This includes their history, religious beliefs, societal values and attitudes, artistic traditions, taboos and even social etiquettes.

2. Recognize barriers to multicultural communication. This could be the presence of stereotypes, gaps in communication and interactions, linguistic barriers, fear and distrust, etc.

3. Develop techniques of multicultural communication. Enhancing knowledge about a culture’s communication style, inculcating respect, suspending judgments, incorporating the words of the other in our own response, etc.

An essay test is simply a firm of recall and this may not be ideal to retrieve memories when compared to recognition. In this case, rather than preparing for an essay, preparing for a multiple choice may be the better idea.
