Factors in the environment that an organism reacts to, such as light, temperature, and sound are known as stimuli.

In the field of ecology, abiotic factors can be described as the non-living components of an ecosystem. When an organism reacts to these abiotic factors such as light, temperature, and sound then these are perceived as stimuli.

A stimulus is a change in the environment that is detected by the sensory receptors. A signal is carried through these receptors to the central nervous system (CNS). The central nervous system interprets this message and sends a response signal through the effector motor neurons to respond to the stimulus.

The intensity of a stimulus is measured by the number of action potentials that are received by the central nervous system (CNS).
