This is accomplished by lowering the non-spontaneous redox reaction's activation energy barrier by the flow of electrons (into the reaction environment).

The following are the three essential parts of electrolytic cells:

  • Cathode (which is negatively charged for electrolytic cells)
  • Anode (which is positively charged for electrolytic cells)
  • Electrolyte

The cathode and anode exchange electrons through a medium that is provided by the electrolyte. In electrolytic cells, molten sodium chloride and water with dissolved ions are two common electrolytes.
