Perhaps it was his own lack of proper education that led him to work so hard to implement the important educational reforms advocated by Horace Mann.
In his twelve yearly reports to Massachusetts, Mann developed and presented his proposals for educational reform. It was created when he served as education secretary. Massachusetts' reforms were considered very radical at the time, but later became a model for the nation's education system.
Throughout his life, Horace Mann worked tirelessly to expand educational opportunities for the children of farmers and poor workers. Mann was officially recognized as the father of public education.
