• Kudzu is an Asian plant. Unlike other invasive species, this one was brought here on purpose, and at first, everyone adored it. The Japanese government filled its display at the 1876 Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, with plants native to Japan. Kudzu was later promoted as forage or food for cattle and goats. Moreover, the government encouraged the spread of kudzu by planting it to control erosion during the 1930s and 1940s.

However, because it is easily overgrazed, farmers must have a backup food source for their animals.

• Kudzu can grow about a foot per day, or 60 feet in a growing season. Huge tap roots assist the plant in surviving dry periods and make kudzu impossible to remove.  The massive leaves shade out the sun and suffocate existing plants. As with all invasives, the lack of natural checks and balances is what has transformed kudzu from a beautiful plant into a noxious weed.
