Which rock will float in water?
Rocks sink when they are submerged in water due to their weight. The only rock that floats in water, on the other hand, is pumice. Due to its low density, pumice floats in water unlike other types of rock.
When a volcano erupts and the lava immediately contacts the ocean, pumice rock is created. The water swiftly cools the lava, which then solidifies as pumice with lots of trapped air bubbles.
It is light enough to float thanks to these air pockets. Pumice can float on water for years before becoming saturated and eventually sinking because it has a porosity of 64–85 percent by volume.
