Ethan and Adrian are reading the same book. At the beginning of the month, Ethan was on page 18 and Adrian was on page 45. Ethan

will read 12 pages per day and Adrian will read 9 pages per day. Let E represent the page of the book that Ethan is on at the end of t days into the month, and let A represent the page of the book that Adrian is on at the end of t days into the month. Write an equation for each situation, in terms of t, and determine whether Ethan or Adrian is farther along in the book after 4 days.

The equations are e = 18+12t and a = 45+9t

Adrian will be father along in the book after 4 days. She will be 15 pages ahead of Ethan

Ethan's page number at the beginning of the month = 18

Adrian's page number at the beginning of the month = 45

Pages read by Ethan each day = 12 pages

Pages read by Adrian each day = 9 pages

Let e represent the page of the book that Ethan is on at the end of t days into the month. Let a represent the page of the book that Adrian is on at the end of t days into the month.

Formulating the equation we get the following:

e = 18 + 12t

a = 45 + 9t

Finding the page number of both Ethan and Adrian after 4 days by substituting the values in the equations we get:

e = 18+12(4)

e = 66

a = 45 + 9(4)

a = 81

Give an example of: degree of a polynomial is the highest sum of one of its terms, explain.
yuradex [85]

Example 1 Perform the indicated operation for each of the following.

(a) Add to

(b) Subtract

Solution

(a) Add to .

The first thing that we should do is actually write down the operation that we are being asked to do.

In this case the parenthesis are not required since we are adding the two polynomials. They are there simply to make clear the operation that we are performing. To add two polynomials all that we do is combine like terms. This means that for each term with the same exponent we will add or subtract the coefficient of that term.

In this case this is,

[Return to Problems]

(b) Subtract from .

Again, let’s write down the operation we are doing here. We will also need to be very careful with the order that we write things down in. Here is the operation

lilavasa [31]
8 pounds of pears would cost 64.00 because 40/5=8.00-price per pear so 8 pounds x8= 64.00
