To find the total yield of pumpkins in the two fields you must add the the 2 mixed numbers of the smaller yields.

3\frac{2}{5}+2\frac{1}{12}

convert the mixed numbers into fractions by mutiplying the denominator with the whole number and adding the numerator, to find the numerator. the denominator stays the same

3\frac{2}{5}=\frac{(3\cdot5)+2}{5}=\frac{17}{5}2\frac{1}{12}=\frac{(12\cdot2)+1}{12}=\frac{25}{12}

add both fractions together

\frac{17}{5}+\frac{25}{12}=\frac{17\cdot12+25\cdot5}{12\cdot5}=\frac{204+125}{60}=\frac{329}{60}

convert into a mixed number

\frac{329}{60}=5\frac{29}{60}

The total yield of pumpkins is

5\frac{29}{60}\text{tons of pumpkin}
