Scientific researchers discovered agents that behaved like bacteria causing diseases such as rabies and hoof-and-mouth, but were

much smaller. At this time it became the general view that viruses were biologically "alive." This changed in 1935 when the tobacco mosaic virus was crystallized and scientists demonstrated that the particles lacked any mechanisms necessary for metabolic function. It was determined that viruses consisted of a nucleic acid, DNA or RNA, surrounded by a protein shell and the scientific view changed: viruses are complex biochemical mechanisms but not alive. When not in contact with a host, the virus remains dormant. During this time there are no biological activities occurring and the virus is nothing more than a static organic particle. In this state viruses can remain for extended periods of time, waiting to come into contact with the appropriate host. When in contact with a host, it becomes active, reacts to its environment and/or host and directs its efforts toward self-replication. The viral goal now is to produce more viruses to attack host cells.

According to the passage all but one is a reason to classify viruses as living which is that they lack mechanisms for metabolic function and is denoted as option D.

<h3>What is a Living organism?</h3>

This is referred to something which exhibits the presence of life and are able to transfer genetic traits from the parent to offspring. Living organisms are also able to perform certain types of activities for it to be referred to as being living.

Example of the activities which are performed by living things include the following below:

  • Movement
  • Respiration
  • Excretion
  • Reproduction etc.

Virus is regarded as a living thing because they are capable of protein synthesis and contain a nucleic acid, DNA or RNA. They also have mechanisms for metabolic function which is therefore the reason why option D was chosen as the most appropriate choice.

MArishka [77]

Answer:

According to MacArthur and Wilson's theory of island biogeography, both the land area of an island and the distance from the mainland or continent contribute to species diversity

Explanation:

The ecologists MacArthur and Wilson took the term island biogeography theory to refer to the predictions about the number of species that could be inhabiting on an island.

Island biogeography theory establishes that the two factors that affect species richness in natural communities on an island are the<u> distance from the mainland</u> and <u>the size of the island</u>.

At the same time, these factors affect inmigration and extinction rates. According to the theory, islands that are closer to the continent have higher possibilities of receiving immigrants than those islands that are located farther from the mainland. This is the effect of distance.

The effect of size is reflected in the relation between island size and species diversity.  In smaller islands, the probability of extinction is higher than in bigger islands. Bigger islands can have more species than smaller ones.

In the case of two islands of the same size and different distance to the mainland, both of them will have the same extinction rate, but the one closer to the continent will have a higher immigration rate, and so, a higher amount of species. The S value will be higher on the island closer to the continent.

Which is a true statement about air quality? Good air quality is shown by high levels of smog. O Bacteria is a major cause of po
Vanyuwa [196]

Option (d) EPA measures air quality daily is correct: -

• Option (a) incorrect because smog occurs in air with high air pollution. It usually occurs in colder weather condition and is a mixture of smoke and fog (water molecules in air).

• Option (b) is incorrect because majority of air pollution is due to carbon emission and particulate material evolved due to it and not bacteria. Some bacteria even fix air pollution through the process of bioremediation.

• Option (c) is incorrect as water treatment plants are primarily used to treat waste water so that it can be discharged in larger water bodies.

• Option (d) is correct because EPA (Environment Protection Agency) calculates Air Quality Index (AQI) for five major pollutants which are; ozone, particulate matter, carbon monoxide, sulphur dioxide and nitrogen oxide. This is done to safeguard public health and take preventive measures.
