On October 12, 1492, a sailor looked out from the bow of his sailing ship, the Pinta, to the horizon and saw land. Columbus and his crews saw the New World after ten weeks at sea from the port of Palos, Spain.

Columbus set sail from Spain on August 3, 1492, in search of an all-water route to Asia. More than two months later, on October 12, Columbus landed on an island in the Bahamas he named San Salvador; the natives called it Guanahani.

In the 15th and 16th centuries, Europeans wanted to find sea routes to the Far East. Columbus wanted to find a new route to India, China, Japan and the Spice Islands.

Describe what the nearly 12.5 million African slaves experienced as they crossed the Middle Passage.
katen-ka-za [31]

Answer:

They experienced a dreadful journey. The slaves were tightly packed into ships. There was not much fresh air to breathe and the stench was horrible. There was almost no room to move and many of the slaves wished for death. Illness was common and the white men would flog the slaves. Some were force fed and if they didn’t agree with eating, they would get whipped and cut. The African slaves had horrible experiences while crossing The Middle Passage.
