Zitkala-Sa was subjected to racial prejudice, whereas Bama was subjected to untouchability and caste prejudice. Bama was outraged to see the upper class mistreat the Dalits. To treat some people like untouchables was disgusting.

On February 22, 1876, Zitkala-Sa was born on the Yankton Indian Reservation. She spent her early years on the reservation being reared by her Sioux Dakota-born mother. Little is known about her father, an Anglo-American.

She felt hopeless and helpless like a puppet, losing all enthusiasm. She began to feel like an animal being led by a herder and frantically searched for solace. She whimpered in pain, her hair shingling like a coward's.

This could be wrong... but we'll give it a try, so here we go.

The theme is afterlife, or longing. The speaker is wishing she/he had the courage of her/his mother instead of something that their mother had owned.
