The configuration file data is stored in random-access memory (RAM) on Cisco devices for Cisco IOS to use, however the RAM loses its data when the device loses power. Cisco uses a variety of more durable memory formats to load all configuration data back once the device loses power.

   To replace the current startup config file with the contents of the running configuration file, issue the command copy running-config startup-config (copy run start).
