On 27 July 1793, Robespierre was elected to the Commission of Public Safety, formed in April to protect France from internal and external enemies and to oversee the government.

Under his leadership, the commission exercised de facto dictatorial control over the French government. On this day in 1794, Maximilien Robespierre, Louis Antoine de Saint-Just, Georges Couton and many of his colleagues were guillotined in Paris. Robespierre, Saint-Just and Couton were leaders of the French Revolution and the radical Jacobins. Robespierre ruled France for about two years, from the fall of the French monarchy on August 10, 1792, to his death by guillotine on July 28, 1794. Robespierre played a key role in the uprising of August 10, 1792, which abolished the French monarchy.
