  • Recessive genes are more often fatal. If a person carries both recessive alleles of this gene, they will die.
  • In the heterozygous form, recessive lethal alleles do not result in death because a specific level of protein production is maintained.
  • Recessive genes can cause death, as demonstrated by the aforementioned mice tests. Depending on the gene or genes involved, deadly genes can also be dominant, conditional, semilethal, or synthetic.
  • Because dominant lethal alleles only exist for one generation and are therefore rarely transferred, they are extremely uncommon. If a dominant fatal allele does not manifest itself until adulthood, it may unwittingly be passed on, delaying death in both generations.
