This is important because food in smaller pieces has a bigger surface area for chemical digestion than food in larger pieces.

It is necessary to break down the large food bits that are swallowed into smaller pieces so that different enzymes can work on them. This process of chewing or mastication in the mouth and subsequent churning and mixing in the stomach is known as mechanical digestion.

Chemical digestion breaks down the large molecules of lipids, proteins, and carbs into smaller ones that can be absorbed and used by the cells. Water and digestive enzymes are used in a process known as hydrolysis during chemical digestion to break down complex compounds. The normally sluggish hydrolysis process is sped up by digestive enzymes.
