Western Massachusetts had Shays' Rebellion, an armed rebellion that lasted from 1786 to 1787. The rebels, led by Daniel Shays, were modest farmers who were enraged by crippling debt and taxes. They also objected to the fact that failing to pay such obligations sometimes ended in incarceration. Many people believed that this was unfair, unjust, and primarily favoured the wealthy. After the American revolution, the taxation was planned to replenish the government's funds.
