According to self-determination theory, our self-esteem is boosted when our needs for relatedness and autonomy are satisfied in balance with our psychological need for competence.

Self-determination theory (SDT) is a motivational theory of personality, development, and social processes. It suggests that an individual is born with an intrinsic motivation to discover, absorb and dominate their surroundings and high self-esteem is observed when the three basic psychological needs are satisfied and these three basic psychological needs that every human possess are autonomy i.e., the need to feel ownership of behavior, competence i.e., the need to produce desired results and gain expertise, and relatedness i.e., the need to feel connected to other people.
