The main reason that basso continuo became obsolete during the classical era was that more and more music was written for amateurs who could not master the difficult art of improvising from a figured bass.

What is the basso continuo?

During the Baroque era, the Basso continuo provided an harmonic structure of the music by supplying a bassline and a chord progression. It is often shortened to continuo and the instrumentalists playing the continuo part are called the continuo group

Some of the reason why the basso continuo become obsolete in the classical era was because the Classical composers wanted more control over their compositions than was possible with performers improvising the basso continuo.
