A stranded soldier shoots a signal flare into the air to attract the attention of a nearby plane. The flare has an initial veloc

ity of 1500 feet per second. Its height is defined by the quadratic function below. Assume that the flare is fired from ground level. h=ViT-16t^2
1. When will the fare reach 35,156.25 feet??
2.If the plane is flying at a height of 30,000 feet, a speed of 880 feet per second and is 50,000 feet fro the fare when it is fired, will the flare hit it? If so, tell when this will happen. If not, tell when the fare reaches the planes altitude.

<span>
1 . when will the fare reach that height:</span>

<span>The ascending and descending time are equal but let's show it: set the h = 0 </span>

<span>
1500t - 16t^2 = 0 => solve the quadratic </span>

<span>
t = 0 => reject </span>

<span>
t = 375/4 seconds => period to hit the ground, notice that this is twice the time to reach max h. </span>

2. If the plane … solution:

<span>d = vt </span>

<span>
t = d/v </span>

<span>
= 50,000/880 </span>

<span>
It is approximately 56.8 sec to reach the flare but the flare reached max h at 375/8 ≈ 46.9 sec, so it won't hit the plane going up, but will it hit the plane on its way down from 35,156.25 ft.</span>

If the wait time is less than 30 minutes for 75% of all patients in the emergency room, what is the probability that the
Greeley [361]

The probability that the proportion of patients who wait less than 30 minutes is 0.582 or less is 0.0020

<h3>What is probability? </h3>

Probability can be defined as the likelihood of an event to occur. In statistics, the mean of the sample distribution typically shows the probability of the population.

From the parameters given:

  • The sample size (n) = 55 patients
  • Let's assume that the mean (x) = 32 (i.e. 58.2%) of the patients

The sample proportion \mathbf{\hat p} can be computed by using the expression:

\mathbf{\hat p = \dfrac{x}{n}}

\mathbf{\hat p = \dfrac{32}{55}}

\mathbf{\hat p =0.582}

If the percentage of the probability of all patients in the emergency room = 0.75

The probability that the proportion of patients who wait less than 30 minutes is 0.582 or less can be computed as:

\mathbf{( \hat P \leq 0.582) = P \Big( \dfrac{\hat p - p}{\sqrt{\dfrac{p(1-p)}{n}}} \leq \dfrac{0.582 - 0.75}{\sqrt{\dfrac{0.75(1-0.75)}{55}}} \Big )}

\mathbf{( \hat P \leq 0.582 )= P \Big( Z \leq \dfrac{-0.168}{\sqrt{0.003409}} \Big )}

\mathbf{( \hat P \leq 0.582) = P \Big( Z \leq -2.88 \Big )}

From the Z distribution table:

\mathbf{( \hat P \leq 0.582) = 0.00198}

\mathbf{( \hat P \leq 0.582) \simeq 0.0020}
