Estas fueron algunas de las preguntas a las que se ha intentado dar respuesta por parte de la historia económica. Tras la II Guerra Mundial, superados los efectos de la gran depresión de los años 30, los economistas volvieron a centrar sus investigaciones en los mecanismos del desarrollo económico. Se identificó desarrollo e industrialización y el estudio de la Revolución Industrial se puso de moda entre los economistas. Se intentaba encontrar en ella la clave del desarrollo; así lo hacía W.W. Rostow en su libro “Las etapas del crecimiento económico”, donde partiendo del estudio de la industrialización inglesa, intentaba describir la senda del desarrollo, las fases que debían recorrer necesariamente las economías atrasadas para alcanzar la industrialización.

 

Los avances de la historia económica a lo largo de los años sesenta y setenta llevaron a la conclusión de que no existía un camino único. Los trabajos de Gerschenkron se centraron en el estudio del atraso económico y los procesos de industrialización tardíos. Desde entonces el enfoque comparativo del desarrollo industrial en diversos países ha servido para validar hipótesis sobre la influencia de tal o cual factor en la industrialización. Este enfoque hizo que el análisis se centrara en las naciones-Estado (los países), dada la importancia que el marco institucional y el papel de los Estados han tenido en el desarrollo industrial.
