Scout doesn’t conform to the socially constructed gender roles females face. Instead of assuming a womanly stance, she is often seen as a tomboy and hangs out with mostly guys. If anything, Scout is an example of feminism. She is committing extremely courageous act at a very young age during a time where going against the female gender role would be seen with disapproval.
The author develops the theme in the first passage by saying that the characters in the story are facing a conflict with water sewage. The water overflows and causes problems for the people. The second passage talks about how the Kings get to live in luxury, ignore the public and their surroundings, while the people and their surroundings suffer and die.
