We are waiting for Gillian to spend all his money, and we assume that he will spend it in a carefree manner. However, the reader learns that he in fact spent it in an honourable way. Nevertheless, because the lawyer does not know what just happened, he also assumes that Gillian has spent his money in a carefree manner.
