La plata, al igual que el oro, eran los metales preciosos utilizados para fabricar monedas, y dinero en general.

Que la corona española tuviera a su disposición minas de plata en hispanoamerica como la de Potosí, en Bolivia, significaba que España ahora disponía de más metal precioso, y por ende, más dinero.

Este dinero fue principalmente usado para pagar los gastos de la corona en España, y para financiar las guerras en las que se vio involucrada España en toda Europa.
