With the age of enlightenment, people started educating themselves more so naturally there were many more doctors that were educated people. The practice of having spiritual people to heal you with pseudomedicine started going down. People started discovering things that helped medicine develop. Women played a part because they started working in the medical field like nurses, they would deliver children, or even learn how to help people themselves.
