One advantage of using dialogue in a narrative essay is the fact that it allows us to show who the characters are. An author can introduce characters without using dialogue. He can simply list them and provide descriptions. However, this is significantly less interesting and engaging for the reader. On the other hand, if the author uses dialogue, he can show the characters' actions and opinions in their own words, introducing them in a more dynamic way.
