A number and it's absolute value are equal. If you subtract 2 from the number, the new number and it's absolute value are not equal. What do you know about the number? What is a possible number that satisfies these conditions?

This means that the number is positive. 

The absolute value is the distance away from 0 the number is.

So 1's absolute value would be 1, yet -5's absolute value would be 5.

So the number that's equal to its absolute value is positive, and the one that's not is negative.

So if you subtract 2 from the positive number, it must turn negative.

So 1 is a number that satisfies these conditions.
