Their heartland was a gulf of Mexico and influenced the trade activity. By 1200 BCE they had reached Nicaragua. Other features of the Olmec culture included animal gods, chocolate drinking, Huge stone sculpture, and sacred complexes. The name Olmec was given to them by the Aztecs. their ethnic origin is still unknown.
