Hyperemesis gravidarum (HG) is a rare condition characterized by intense, persistent and frequent vomiting and nausea during pregnancy. As a result, women cannot eat adequate amounts of food and fluids, which causes a decrease of more than 5% in body weight before pregnancy. They become dehydrated and suffer from vitamin and mineral deficiencies. If symptoms are noted at the onset of hyperemesis gravidarum, vomiting and feeling sick may decrease considerably.
It is used to test for reducing sugars. In presence of these sugars, the reagent, that is blue in color, turns different shaded of red (to brick red), depending on the amount of reducing sugars in the solution. It is important to note that the solution has to be heated.
