English is built upon several different languages. Much of it comes from Greek and Latin, evidenced by the roots of many of our words (i.e., LEGible, OCTOpus). Spanish is also prevalent, though not to this extent. Other languages such as German are also laced in. English is fundamentally built on other languages, giving it this "layered cake" title.
