His powers were not absolute despite his great influence. His proposals were resisted by his councils at many times and this went on throughout his life. People always viewed of him as the first among the equals and never thought of him as an autocrat. All his power came from his wealth that he earned as a Banker.

He was always keen into learning of arts and architecture. He always used his wealth as his power and by that he was very efficient in taking control over votes which were for the office holders who used to held high offices at Municipal councils. As much as he was proud of his democracy, his ambition in regards to politics was very little and he never held any public office.
