Second continental congress was organised in 1775. It was different form the first congress as it didn't simply demonstrate the unity but was a form of government to direct and organise the colonies.

All thirteen colonies elected their delegates to represent them at continental congress.  It functioned as a government, issued paper currency, appointed ambassadors and raised a continental army through conscription and also appointed the generals to lead the army.  

The Second continental congress was called because the American revolutionary war had started on April 19,1775.  The battle of Lexington and Concord was the first military engagement between the colonialists and the British.
