Kennan's main goal of US policy was to prevent the spread of communism to countries by creating a system of military alliances. Containment was one of the main goals of Truman's doctrine, and its effect, among others, were the creation of NATO (1949), ANZUS (1951), SEATO (1954) and CENTO (1955).

In the 1960s, in connection with the popularization of the domino effect theory, the use of the containment doctrine was also extended to support for pro-American governments around the world (including military regimes).
