Crossing over can be defined as exchange of a segment of genetic material between two homologous chromosome. It takes place in the non sister chromatids which results in new combination of chromosomes which occurs during sexual reproduction.
In this case recombination also takes place which leads to the genetic variation in the characters of the organism.
