When dividing 1 by a number N to produce a decimal, what is the maximum size of the repeating portion?
AnnZ [28]

Great question.  The answer is N-1.

Think about doing long division.  We append a 0, get another digit in the quotient, multiply and subtract to get a remainder.  We can assume that remainder is not zero because then we wouldn't have a repeating decimal.   At each step the remainder has to be less than N, because we're dividing by N.

So there are N-1 possibilities for the remainder.  On the off chance we generate N-1 digits and N-1 remainders and none repeat, we know the next one will repeat, because we've already generated all the possible remainders.

So the largest size of the repeating portion is N-1.   This maximum happens first for 1/7.

grigory [225]

25. time = distance/speed

\displaystyle t=\frac{66.5\,ft}{105\,\frac{mi}{h}}\times\dfrac{3600\,s}{h}\times\frac{1\,mi}{5280\,ft}\\\\=\frac{66.5\times 3600}{105\times 5280}\,s=\frac{19}{44}\,s\approx 0.432\,s

It took about 432 milliseconds for the ball to travel to the batter.

26. 15 cans at Save Rite will cost 5 times the amount for 3 cans, so will be

... 5×$5.25 = $26.25

15 cans at Spend Less will cost 3 times the amount for 5 cans, so will be

... 3×$7.50 = $22.50

Maria paid $22.50 at Spend Less.

27. Simple interest is computed using

I = Prt . . . . where P is the principal, r is the annual rate, and t is the number of years.

Filling in the numbers gives the interest charge.

I = $8000×0.065×4 = $2080

Malik pays back the principal plus interest, so pays $8000 +2080 = $10,080.

The durations of a random sample of 16 commercials are below (in seconds). find the mean, median, and mode of these durations. 3
UkoKoshka [18]
First arrange in ascending order of time:-

7, 8, 10, 12, 14, 15, 18, 20, 26, 30, 30, 30, 35, 35, 42, 55

MOde is the value occuring mos  = 30.

Median is the mean of 2 middle numbers = (20 + 26) / 2 = 23

Mean = sum of the 16 numbers  / 16  =  387/16  = 24.2

Nicolas has $650 to deposit into two different savings accounts. • Nicolas will deposit $400 into Account I, which earns 3.5% an
Nitella [24]
The initial amount is $650. The $400 is deposited in Account 1 with 3.5% annual simple interest. The $250 is deposited in Account 2 with 3.5% interest compounded monthly.
n = 2 years
Account 1: Simple Interest

F = P (1+rn)
   = 400 (1 +(0.035*2))
   = $428

Account 2: Compound Interest

F = P (1+i)^n
   = 250 ( 1+0.035)^2
F =  267.81

Total money after 2 years = $428 + $267.81
 T = $695.81
