Located in the U.S. states of New York and New Jersey, Ellis Island is a federally owned island that was formerly the busiest immigration screening and processing facility in the country. San Francisco Bay has the island of Angel Island. Angel Island State Park, which is run by California State Parks, covers the entire island. On May 6, 1882, President Chester A. Arthur signed the Chinese Exclusion Act, a federal law that forbade the entry of any Chinese laborers for ten years. Merchants, educators, students, travelers, and diplomats were not covered by the statute. The Chinese Exclusion Act, which built on the earlier Page Act of 1875, which prohibited Chinese women from emigrating to the United States, was the first law ever passed to do the same for an entire ethnic or national group. The first notable law limiting immigration to the US was the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882.
