The Wounded Knee Massacre of <u>December 29, 1890</u>, was the incident where U.S. soldiers killed 150 to 300 Native Americans. The massacre was in the area of Wounded Knee Creek in the southwestern part of South Dakota.

What happened was that the Lakota Indians encountered the United States 7th Cavalry commanded by Major Samuel Whitside. The Lakotas were taken to Wounded Knee Creek. There, they camped.  When the rest of the regiment arrived, Colonel James Forsyth ordered to encircled the Lakotas, and the Army opened rapid-fire.

Polk was a massive supporter for Manifest Destiny, so an encouragement for expansion was something he definitely wanted. Not to mention the conflict over Texas with Mexico. Even more so, the conquest of California was a dream for many Americans, something that was theirs to be taken and that would lead the U.S to expand into the Pacific, and Polk was a big supporter.
