It was his dream to establish an independent Vietnamese country.  He would first fight with the French who he would later defeat and become the leader of North Vietnam.  Later on the North and South fought each other and despite U.S. support, the South was defeated and Vietnam was united under communist rule. But also, to gain Vietnams independence from France.
