John Quincy Adams was the sixth president of the United States from 1825 to 1829, but it was in his role as Secretary of State under the presidency of James Monroe (1817) that he achieved the resolution of the Florida boundary dispute. He negotiated the Adams-Onís Treaty in 1819 (also known as the Transcontinental Treaty), by which <em>Spain ceded Florida</em> to the United States. This Treaty also helped set the boundary between The U. S. and New Spain.
