Colonists' rights were defined by formal documents. British rights were defined by laws and tradition.

Some natural rights of the Colonists include: First, a right to life; Secondly, to liberty; Thirdly, to property; along with the right to support and defend them in the best manner as possible.  

The rights of Englishmen constitute the embraced traditional rights of citizens of England. In the 18th century, some of the colonists who objected to British rule in the British colonies in North America affirmed that their traditional rights as Englishmen were being violated.
