Nutrients can be defined as the micro and macro components of food that are essential for well-being, survival and good health because they provide the required amount of energy. Also, nutrients are used for repairing worn-out body tissues, cells and regulation of chemical processes within the body of a living organism.

Basically, there are six (6) major nutrients required for the proper functioning of the body of a living organism, these are;

I. Fat (lipids): these categories of biological molecules is mainly made up of fats and it is responsible for providing the body with long-term energy.

II. Carbohydrate: it is contained in energy-giving foods and it aids the functioning of the muscles, nervous system and other organs found in the body.

III. Protein: it contains amino acids and it is responsible for maintaining the functioning of the body system.

IV. Vitamins: fruits and vegetables are a very good source of various vitamins for the body.

V. Water: it is one of the essential nutrient that should be consumed always so as to prevent dehydration.

VI. Minerals: it includes potassium, sodium, calcium, iron, etc., which are very important for growth and development of the body.

In conclusion, all of the above mentioned essential nutrients provide the body with the right amount of energy required to function properly.
