Determine whether the following statement is true or false and then explain with an example: "Due to a downturn in the economy,

a small town in Nevada lost 20% of its population. However, after a significant improvement in the economy, this same town then gained 20% more people. In the end, the town's population was the same as it was before the downturn."

Of course, this statement is FALSE.
Let`s assume that a small town in Nevada had a population of 1,000.
When it lost 20% of its population:
1,000 * ( 1 - 0.2 ) = 1,000 - 0.8 = 800
After that the same town gained 20 % more people:
800 * ( 1 + 0.2 ) = 800 * 1.2 = 960
960 ≠ 1,000
In the end the town`s population was not the same as it was before the downturm.

Mary and Jane have $48 to share in the ratio 3:5. How much did each girl 2 points
zubka84 [21]

Answer:

Mary- $18

Jane- $30

Step-by-step explanation:

Add the numbers in the ratio together to get 8, and multiply 8 by the variable of x. Divide the total amount of money that both girls earned by 8. You will get x=6. Multiply 6 by 3 to get the amount of money Mary earned, which is 18, and multiply 6 by 5 to get the amount of money Jane earned, which is 30.

x(3+5) = $48

3x + 5x = $48

8x = $48

8x/8 = $48/8

x = $6

3($6):5($6) = $18:$30
